I'm very cynical these days, and not very left wing anymore but I am very pleased for Obama and the US this morning.
...Despite not going as far as many liberals had hoped, the bill will take the US close to universal healthcare coverage and Obama will have achieved the goal that eluded US presidents dating back to Theodore Roosevelt a century ago.
The reform, which will cost an estimated $940bn (£627bn) over 10 years, amounts to a massive change in US healthcare provision, expanding care to 32 million more people, predominantly the poorest, and giving the country 95% coverage...

To My Fellow Citizens, the Republicans:
Thanks to last night's vote, that child of yours who has had asthma since birth will now be covered after suffering for her first nine years as an American child with a pre-existing condition.
Thanks to last night's vote, that 23-year-old of yours who will be hit one day by a drunk driver and spend six months recovering in the hospital will now not go bankrupt because you will be able to keep him on your insurance policy.
Thanks to last night's vote, after your cancer returns for the third time -- racking up another $200,000 in costs to keep you alive -- your insurance company will have to commit a criminal act if they even think of dropping you from their rolls.
Yes, my Republican friends, even though you have opposed this health care bill, we've made sure it is going to cover you, too, in your time of need...

CHANGE
On his second full day in office, Obama moved to reverse some of the most contentious policies of his predecessor, George W. Bush.
By ordering shut the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, closing any remaining CIA secret prisons overseas and banning harsh interrogation practices, Obama said he was signaling that the U.S. would confront global violence without sacrificing "our values and our ideals."
"First, I can say without exception or equivocation that the United States will not torture," he said. "Second, we will close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp and determine how to deal with those who have been held there."

Guided by Voices
the biggest challenge, I think, is always maintaining your moral compass. Those are the conversations I’m having internally. I’m measuring my actions against that inner voice that for me at least is audible, is active, it tells me where I think I’m on track and where I think I’m off track

Speculation or Change?
Transition news from The States:
CHICAGO - PRESIDENT-ELECT Barack Obama plans to tape a weekly address to the country not just for radio listeners, as US presidents have done so for years, but for YouTube viewers as well.
It is the first visible result of a major transition-team effort to make Mr Obama's conversations with the electorate more direct, reported the Miami Herald.
In addition, members and supporters of the White House media upgrade want more input opportunities for the public.
Many of the changes, if adopted, would curb the power of a traditional but often unpopular middleman between presidents and the populace: the mainstream media.
Connecting the White House hearth to the American home, the late president Franklin D. Roosevelt talked to people through the radio in the 1930s, with crackling broadcasts delivered near a crackling fire. John F. Kennedy in the 1960s and Ronald Reagan in the 1980s mastered television.
For President-elect Obama, who built a big part of his campaign on the Internet, it is YouTube.
also
Barack Obama is to pursue an ambitious peace plan in the Middle East involving the recognition of Israel by the Arab world in exchange for its withdrawal to pre-1967 borders, according to sources close to America’s president-elect.
and from the Republicans, getting in on the act too:
" 'Drill, baby, drill,' is not, by itself, an energy policy," Pawlenty said.

Bloody hell- Its Obama!
In a symbolic move, Obama spoke in the same hall where McCain will accept the Republican nomination at his party's convention in September. Campaign officials, citing the local fire marshal, put the crowd at 17,000 inside the eXcel Energy Center, plus another 15,000 outside.
McCain addressed a smaller crowd by design, an estimated 600 in his audience and another 600 outside.
One campaign began as another was ending.
Well that was a surprise. I've been watching this from afar with my pals in Sparkleland. She is not usually wrong about these things, I'm glad she was this time. Not that I'm expecting Obama to do anything. If he is the lesser of evils, I suppose that is OK. Obviously I hope for a "surge". A reaction around the world to a black president which might push him into doing something. I hope for him to speak in a language which will out date the mindset of my republican friends. Will he? We'll see. Anyway the Pakistanis are happy:
A former senior Pakistani diplomat, who was briefly ambassador to the United States, Tariq Fatemi, said that Mr. Obama’s “idealism” struck a chord with Pakistanis.
“Barack Obama would do very well in improving the image of the United States. He would position the United States more as a force for moral values rather than for brute force,” he said.

YES WE CAN

...he indulged in marijuana, alcohol and sometimes cocaine as a high school student in Hawaii, according to the book. He made “some bad decisions” as a teenager involving drugs and drinking, Senator Obama, now a presidential candidate, told high school students in New Hampshire last November...
Bad decisions? Haven't we all Mr O.

Why I'm Backing Obama
Fuck knows. I mean really. I thought Blair was going to be the "Third Way" and look what happened. I haven't got a good track record on these things. I can usually guess who is going to become the next Tory leader from one look at the candidates. As for a "least worst" leader in this world we live in I try really hard not to get sucked in because it's often a huge disappointment. He's got a nice smile? If he rides in on a "Kennedy-esque wave" he might actually do something? The mad 'mentalists might give him a chance to develop plans for a safer world before exploding? God knows. Anyway I know I probably shouldn't, bite size TV politics being like crack an' all but I'm backing Obama apparently.
