THE GOLDEN CALF

Great doco about the Contemporary Art Market on the iPlayer here. I've always been the kid shouting at the naked king when it comes to contemporary art so this news is something I have been waiting for for a long time. The shockwaves will hopefully be reverberating through shit holes like Goldsmiths (Degree show coming soon!) who teach their students to churn out this rubbish.

Feel free to tell me my art is rubbish here

my art seeks to address the viewer as a social or collective subject, rather than as a detached individual who regards the work of art in isolated contemplation.

It doesn't really. I just copied that from somewhere.

You had me worried for a minute there.

The thing I find troubling about art these days, and what reconciled my angst at going dormant, is how it's viewed in terms of product or commodity.

To my way of thinking, anyone with the slightest creative urge should feel free to make art, regardless of what form the residue takes.

Masterworks are fine things, and rare, but it's what drives the work that is important. The same creative urge that drove men miles underground to paint on cave walls by torchlight is what matters.

This relationship of man with a fundamental urge has largely been forgotten and replaced by artists working to produce things that might pass as art.

Product matters too much, these days, and that mindset dooms an artist to failure.

Yeah. Contemporary art is just shite. It is nothing about creativity. A friend of mine graduated from St Matins thinking that art was about "Getting away with it". Basically conning people. Like Hirst and his fag butts. Fuck all to do with the miracle of creativity. I want nothing to do with any of this.

Yeah man, "Getting away with it".
That's it exactly.

I'm with you.
