NICE ONE O

I'm very cynical these days, and not very left wing anymore but I am very pleased for Obama and the US this morning.

...Despite not going as far as many liberals had hoped, the bill will take the US close to universal healthcare coverage and Obama will have achieved the goal that eluded US presidents dating back to Theodore Roosevelt a century ago.

The reform, which will cost an estimated $940bn (£627bn) over 10 years, amounts to a massive change in US healthcare provision, expanding care to 32 million more people, predominantly the poorest, and giving the country 95% coverage...

More from Michael Moore

To My Fellow Citizens, the Republicans:

Thanks to last night's vote, that child of yours who has had asthma since birth will now be covered after suffering for her first nine years as an American child with a pre-existing condition.

Thanks to last night's vote, that 23-year-old of yours who will be hit one day by a drunk driver and spend six months recovering in the hospital will now not go bankrupt because you will be able to keep him on your insurance policy.

Thanks to last night's vote, after your cancer returns for the third time -- racking up another $200,000 in costs to keep you alive -- your insurance company will have to commit a criminal act if they even think of dropping you from their rolls.

Yes, my Republican friends, even though you have opposed this health care bill, we've made sure it is going to cover you, too, in your time of need...

SICKO

Well, as you may have read by now, our premiere of "Sicko" at the Cannes Film Festival has been an overwhelming success. The 2,000 people inside the Lumiere Theater were alternately in tears and laughing during the two-hour film -- and when it was over, they gave it a standing ovation that seemed to go on for nearly 15 minutes! Many came up to me and said (and critics seem to agree) that this is my best film yet. I don't know about that, and it seems weird to compare any of these movies in the first place. But I do feel safe in saying that I am very, very happy with this film and I can't wait to show it to you when it opens on June 29th.

Cannes is a crazy place. There are film lovers here from nearly every country in the world. And then there are the people in "show business." These dark forces have virtually ruined this art form (invented by the French and nurtured to brilliance by the country I call home). There are so many bad, awful films now and less and less people are going to the movies. Many who run Hollywood believe that the American people are too stupid to enjoy a film that respects their intelligence.

At the press screening for "Sicko," the Wall Street Journal reported that hardened reporters and critics wept. Even those who have been harsh to me in the past, or who have not agreed with my politics, were moved. Aside from my stated desire that "Sicko" ignite a fire for free, universal health care (and a larger wish that we, as Americans, do a better job of treating each other with a true sense of solidarity and respect), I continue to hope that I can make a contribution to the art of cinema and give people a good reason to get out of the house for a few hours.

Republicans are half the audience.

Spoke to Mr. Abdullah. Says he didn't do it. Described the people who did as "Idiots."

I think calling me a "TERRORIST LOVER" is out of order. You don't know me. I've spent a considerable time gaining the trust of Abu hamza's friends and family for a film in the usual way a documentary maker would work. I like Michael Moores films, but to alienate Republicans as a film maker is to loose half your audience. Instead we have pitched the concept of a meeting between some of our Republican friends and ALL the Fundamental Islamists I have met on this journey.

"If you think you can swing it, I'm up for it." said Abu Abdullah.

If I can make something both sides are happy with I am happy.

Want to see it? email the BBC and Channel Four about it, they both have our proposal.

MALUNG FILTERED NEWS

The Downing Street Memo, official minutes of a 2002 meeting minutes between British Prime Minister Tony Blair, members of British intelligence MI-6 and various members of the Bush administration, notes that MI-6 director Richard Dearlove said, “Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy.”

Blair and other British officials have not questioned the minutes’ veracity.

If I die in Iraq, I do not want anyone to make a political statement out of my death. I need to say that again. If I die in Iraq, I do not want to be used as a martyr for political gain.

a very interesting review of Michael Moores book: Dude where's my country from an american soldier serving in Iraq.

"They were very good breakfasts," says McAlpine. "Kidneys, sausages, bacon, scrambled egg, kippers, all that kind of thing, laid out on a big buffet. The point of the buffet was we didn't have any waiters in the room - so no one could hear what we were plotting - and it was good plotting stuff."

an article about the last campaign for a "yes vote" in Britain.

To round up: a story about Tony and Cherrie's spiritual awakening

the Guardian newspaper in Britain published ample extracts from Francis Wheen's new book, "How Mumbo-Jumbo Conquered the World: A Short History of Modern Delusions." Wheen recounts the rise of gurus, spiritualists and assorted pagan beliefs. One of the most successful modern gurus is Deepak Chopra, who earns around $20 million a year...Wheen also recounts that Cherie Blair, wife of the British Prime Minister, is keen on alternative forms of spirituality....Both Cherie and Tony Blair underwent a Mayan rebirthing experience while on holidays in Mexico in 2001.

MICHAEL MORONS

Just watched Farenheit 9/11 four times in a row. I borrowed a cracked div-x with shite sound so right wingers reading this will be pleased to know Moore didn't get any of my money. What an amazing film. I’ve been following and contributing to a debate about it on the shooting people website. Some (jealous) people have been criticizing Moore for “dumbing down” documentaries. For fuck’s sake, if my target audience was the sort of person who signs up for the US military I would speak very slowly too. Moore calls Bush exactly what he is. What would be the point of calling him an orifice usually associated with female reproduction just to keep intellectual documentary makers happy? Fuck them.
