Is Tony Blair the man to help Christians, Jews and Muslims get along? Is he really the person to foster interfaith dialogue by means of a global foundation to be run, if reports are to be believed, from offices at the £3.5m Connaught Square home to which he will shortly retire? Some are sceptical. "He may want to build bridges between the world religions, but the fact is he has already burned them," says vociferous Blair critic and Lib Dem MP Norman Baker. "He has been seen to be partisan in the Middle East, slavishly following Bush, and will have no credibility with the Islamic world. His bridge will at best be a pier."
An arch-conservative cardinal chosen by the Pope to deliver this year’s Lenten meditations to the Vatican hierarchy has caused consternation by giving warning of an Antichrist who is “a pacifist, ecologist and ecumenist”.
Cardinal Giacomo Biffi, 78, who retired as Archbishop of Bologna three years ago, quoted Vladimir Solovyov (1853-1900), the Russian philosopher and mystic, as predicting that the Antichrist “will convoke an ecumenical council and seek the consensus of all the Christian confessions”.
The “masses” would follow the Antichrist, “with the exception of small groups of Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants” who would fight to prevent the watering down and ultimate destruction of the faith, he said.

DUALITY
How do you agree with two opposing points of view?
Last night on Question Time someone asked if Tony doing the Middle east peace envoy thing would cause a headache for Gordon Brown. Piers Morgan said:
"If it wasn't laughable I'd cry...It is outrageous that we have just accepted that he is doing it...People over there will think- Thats the guy who's going to bring peace to the middle east? The guy who just killed all our Muslim brothers and sisters?"
Later The evil Howard (of all people) said:
"I welcome this appointment...Tony Blair just may be the man to persuade president Bush to take part in this. If he is prepared to learn from mistakes in the past...and exert his influence to the maximum, he is a guy Bush will listen to."
I agree with both these points of view.

I JUST CAN'T HATE TONY
Much as I have tried to get on the "Bliar" tip, it just don't work with me and I must admit I'm going to miss him though it'd be nice if he had said something about these rendition flights before he did a runner eh?
Ten years.
I remember ten years ago, one of my only clear memories. I was squatting with some junkies in Dalston. I watched Tony's “A new day has dawned has it not”. I saw Billy Bragg at the Respect festival in Hyde park saying “I can retire now!”
I remember a huge fever gripped me for a week which ended in a night of sweating, tossing and turning, scrapping the sweat off myself with my bed sheet. I remember how the bed sheet stank in the morning with an inhuman satanic smell and how I thought it was 18 years of Tory rule coming out through my skin. I celebrated my recovery with a toot of scag which, with nothing in my stomach was the only time I actually got a good effect from the stuff.
I remember bounding down the road and accosting a couple of passing Policemen.
“Do you think things are going to change now?” I asked them.
A bit taken aback one of them scratched his chin.”I don't know. How do you mean?”
“I mean between YOU LOT and US.”
Not knowing what to say they sort of On your way laddie'd me a bit. I was optimistic for a long while, thinking that Blair was speaking with a voice that outclassed any Politician.
I remember the horror as pretty early on I realised he was going to drag us into Iraq. I remember the concrete blocks going up round parliament and thinking someone somewhere thinks we are less safe because of all this.
I remember how it motivated me to start filming what was happening here, and also clearly led me on a mission to befriend grass roots US Republicans. I think Tony has hugely let us down, but that is a human result of this "vote for me" game which is beyond any human capabilities.

The Rise and Fall of Tony Blair seemed to show the good points as well as the frightening elements of Blairs "Vision thing". It caught his horrifying journey from Muslim hero in Kosovo to Islamic hate figure today. Rory Bremners My Part in His Downfall was also fantastic. Try to see both if you have a chance. Talking about chances I've got to wish Tony well in Palestine. Ireland is far from sorted, but people aren't bombing each other. I reckon Tony wants this for Palestine and for himself. The right combination of universal interest and self interest, when people realise what is really in their interest is going to sort it out for all of us and we've all got everything to play for.

Later, in Basra, Blair would tell the troops that the struggle they were engaged in was "infinitely more important than Northern Ireland", for the simple reason that it would shape "the future of the world".
On the plane, in a brief audience with the PM, I said that the events of the day were of course exhilarating but also intimidating. How long does it take to evolve from terror to politics? Could he imagine, in the Iraqi parliament of the future, the ghosts of Muqtada al-Sadr and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi gazing at each other with smiling eyes?

Watching the BBC morning vagueley Political show I saw Andrew Marr questioning our dear leader. As usual, he's got me convinced. I don't hate Blair, I sort of grumble about him, then I see him answer questions and think- OK. Thats alright then.

Dont hold your breath
UK Muslim leaders and politicians agree to tackle terrorism "head on", says Tony Blair.
Even the BBC site says that they don't stand much of a chance, as they have as much contact with radical ideologists as they do with alchoholics. For years all these mosques have been enthusiasticaly "rooting out extremism" at the behest of the government, now the government wants them to be missionaries to these same people. Sorry I don't think its going to work.

I do not doubt that everyone who represented radical ideology at the US embassy protest agreed with his statement.
I do not share Abu Hamza's religious views, or hold an opinion as to which Muslims are good and which are bad as long as they all agree that terrorism of innocents is against the Koran.
As you may have gathered by now, I have doubt in my mind as to Abu Hamza's terrorist status. How he spoke, his demeanour in the street, those closest to him, none of it fitted. Standing in the street defending what he was, for over a year and his willingness to go on TV to try and explain himself also caused this doubt in me.
I am really sorry if you hope he is a terrorist and this offends you. All I have done for two years is to try and engage with the sort of people Mr. Blairs Muslim buddies are now suddenly looking for ways to approach.
It is a shame Hamza hated the government so much. He might have been very useful in this situation. I know it sounds ridiculous now, but the BBC tried to engage with him properly once here. (download zip) Watching him mellow over a year of fielding relentless questions from the kaffir media like myself, it almost seemed like the questioning itself was "rehabilitating" him although of course no one got to see this process on TV.
He always seemed to enjoy the cameras. I thought that the media industry could have absorbed him. Even giving him no attention at all would have been better for us in the long run than vilification. As for his friends I hope they would disown any Muslim who wanted to kill innocents here whilst there are Muslims directly suffering in places like Chechenya.
But how many Muslims are there in this country who might think Hamza a "soft Muslim"?

Abu Abdullah
Even last week's bombings did little to curtail the rhetoric of some of the most radical leaders, who criticized British Prime Minister Tony Blair for his statement on Thursday that the bombings appeared to be the work of Islamic terrorists.
''This shows me that he is an enemy of Islam,'' Abu Abdullah, a self-appointed preacher and the spokesman for the radical group Supporters of Shariah, said in an interview on Friday, adding, ''Sometimes when you see how people speak, it shows you who your enemies are.''
Abdullah declared that those British citizens who re-elected Blair ''have blood on their hands'' because British soldiers are killing Muslims. He also said that the British government, not Muslims, ''have their hands'' in the bombings, explaining, ''They want to go on with their fight against Islam.''

BLAIR
Seeing the headlines the other day, complete with close-ups of Mr. Blairs nervous face made me worry a bit about my "fuck the lot of them" political stance. I didn't agree with attacking Iraq. I don't know how someone in a suit can sit there knowing that he has helped unleash death on so many innocent strangers. But to me, Tony Blair is a political freak.
I don't like Blair.
To qualify that statement I have to put in what my ex-girlfriend says about me and Blair.
"You fuckin love him you do! He's your bestest buddy!"
The thing about Blair is that he communicates like no other Politician from left or right and he has always done so. He talks like you and I do. How much of this is stage managed?
No other Prime Minister has used the "masochism special" as a Political media technique. No other Prime Minister has used it to such effect. Every time Blair gets sticky about the war he's off down some backwater hicksville shopping centre getting slagged off to his face by intelligent young members of the public. And it works.
I don't like Blair, but the idea of him loosing to the evil Howard almost makes me want to register, run to the booth and vote for him. There you are. I've said it now.
Why?
Because if the Tory's had been in charge on Sept 11th war would be global, every Muslim I have been filming would have been locked up, guilty or not. I would probably have been locked up for doing what I am doing and this country would be a Police state now, rather than just heading in that direction. To me, the idea of another crisis with the evil Howard in charge does not bear thinking about.
