NIGEL LINSDAY TALKS ABOUT ATILLA's INPIRATION
When Four Lions came out it was pretty obvious that Nigel Lindsay had based his character on Atilla. He talks about it here -
...The other guy was perfect. He worked as the janitor in the Finsbury Park mosque when Abu Hamza took over. This guy converted and became their spokesman. He was a bit like John Prescott in that he spoke really quickly and often talked complete gobbledegook but he had a brilliant way about him. He had real charisma and he’d come out of the mosque and he’d go, “Oi, Mr Policeman, you can’t stand there and...” And he’d talk like this the whole time. I used to do it to myself just before doing Barry scenes. He was wonderful. He got seven years for inciting racial hatred in the end. He was a Greek Cypriot. Abu Abdullah was his name but he was probably called Stefan Iliades or something...

AGE OF EXTREMES
This is the film I ended up in which premiered at The Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn. Ishmahil made the original Blood Diamond doco the DiCaprio film was based on as well as some seminal stuff about Cuba. He is more "anti-media" than I am but then he has had reason to be. Do check it out and tell me what you think. I am at the end of part 4 and a bit more in part 5.

AGE OF EXTREMES premiere TRICYCLE THEATRE
Haha well that worked out.
I haven't blogged about this before just in case. Handing over some of my precious one chip footage to someone else to make a film with has been totally out of the question for a long while, but there hasn't been a point at which I didn't like or trust Ishmahil from Rice and Peas who premièred Age of Extremes at the tricycle last night. He is a bit more anti "mainstream media" than I am, but talking to him about his own experiences he's had reason to be.
Over recent years I have seriously doubted I would do anything with my stuff, so it was good for me to let some out to someone with experience and passion to tell a story. Just chatting while we were transferring the tape dusted off a lot of memories, which was how I ended up actually being in the film as well!
I thought Ishmahil was just going to put a tiny section in but he's used a surprising amount. I was so stuttering and nervous when he was filming that later I asked if he wanted to have another go, but its all ended up just fine and it actually made me cry, seeing what I have been doing, or used to do as part of his story. Its obviously been a burden on my heart for a long time and its good to come out. It was very strange watching myself on the big screen without having seen any of it before. I don't think I have said anything I regret.
The "Helping British people not wanting to blow up" doesn't make grammatical sense, but to be included alongside a really good inside look at The Islamic channel, an insight into the debate amongst British Islamic women about the burkah, The BBC coverage of the floilla raid- I thought the whole film was a really good reflection of the UK and the story flowed really well.
Afterwards I had a bit of a chat with Moazzam Begg and Phil Rees. Moazzam seems like a man on a mission. I hope we can continue on a path with all this.
The next showing is at the Riverside Studios next Thursday, do come down.

MUSA ON TV
He said a lot more than this, and spoke mainly to say that in his opinion, The Quilliam Foundation don't know what they are talking about. I noticed he said
"I have done my time and got out"
when he should have said
"I was held for nine months and found not guilty"!
There has been a bit of press recently about the taps in Hamza's cell and Hamza preaching through the plug hole. Musa reckons this is just prison guards making money out of outlandish stories and he thinks that the drains from the prison within a prison where Hamza is held go in the other direction anyway.
Some of the press goes into much more detail about Fatwahs from Abu Qatada appearing in the Arabic press. One article even elaborates on some sort of code developed by Qatada, Hamza and Abu Doha. I remember a recording of Hamza smuggled out of jail one time reported in the papers. I cant find it online but it sounded genuine. I don't remember that it encouraged terrorism, unless it did so in code of course.
The Prison Service insisted: “There is no proof this recording was made by Hamza and no evidence it was made in prison.”
One report says
...The Ministry of Justice said it had not seen Quilliam's report. The ministry said it was unfortunate Quilliam had not interviewed prison staff as part of its research...
I think Musa, like a lot of Muslims thinks that Quilliam are just trying to justify their budget.
He said the said that the CNN interview was a few minutes out of half an hour, but he wasn't that unhappy with how it came out. I can see that he is on a mission to ready the world for a rehabilitated Atilla, which I think is a good thing. I am not sure that the authorities are ready for the idea at all. I am pretty sure he wont be able to do any media which pretty much fucks up my filming ideas but that is not necessarily a bad thing. He probably could do with being plugged back into family life rather than the oxygen of any more publicity. I am not sure how much more I can say, but I am hoping Musa will drop round and do some more Malung TV soon.

ATILLA IN THE NEWS
A jailed hate preacher has begged to be deported when he is freed - to sever all ties with his old extremist pals.
Atilla Ahmet, 45, says he now shuns terror, despite once hailing the 7/7 blasts and urging the Taliban to bomb Britain. The cleric, an ex-minder of hookhanded Abu Hamza, has asked the Home Office to scrap his UK citizenship and send him to Turkish Cyprus, his parents' country. He is serving seven years for soliciting murder but says he is "deeply ashamed" of his past and has apologised to terror victims.
Brother Musa said: "Atilla doesn't mix with extremists any more and wants to go to Cyprus and keep his head down. He's sorry about what he did and things he said.
"He has a spotless record in jail but fears that the authorities will put him back inside as soon as he is freed."
The dad-of-four, an ex-bouncer and soccer coach, was jailed in March last year. He is likely to be freed from Woodhill jail, Bucks, in February - halfway through his term, including time on remand.
In 2005, a Mirror probe caught Ahmet, of Hither Green, South East London, sneering at "filthy unbelievers" and calling the UK "the front line". He later called 9/11 a "deserved punch on the nose".
He was a key figure in a terror recruitment cell and urged Muslims to commit atrocities.
He was seized in 2006 and admitted three charges.

Self Starter Terr-ist Found Guilty
Isa Ibrahim, 20, made viable explosives, manufactured a suicide vest and carried out reconnaissance on the Broadmead shopping centre. Detectives believe he was about to launch an attack, possibly targeting the centre's busy food court area.
Police are heralding the case as a breakthrough as they say it is the first in which the information about a British would-be terrorist planning an atrocity in the UK has come just from a Muslim community.
Ibrahim's extremism did not come to the attention of the authorities until members of a mosque he attended grew worried about his behaviour and went to Avon and Somerset police.
Apparently Isa radicalised himself and learnt how to make his explosives online.

They are making a lot of this guy taking influence from Abu Hamza. There is also an article written by a Muslim I have just found called Islam and Jihad in context of international treaties and citizenship of a Non-Muslim majority state which says
...Lamentably, today, some elements are exhorting impressionable Muslim youth with to renege on their commitments and pacts in the name of jihad. In this way they are seeking to instigate them to violate the commandments of the shariah and the limits set by God, while also causing grave damage to the cause of Islam and its followers. These stupid people are not friends of Islam. Many of them, in fact, have been nurtured and are being used by the enemies of Islam. In this regard I can cite two notable instances—Abu Hamza al-Misri and Omar al-Bakri—both of who are based in England and are engaged in provoking young Muslims to take to violence while themselves enjoying the protection of the British Government....
This is a minor problem for me in that from what I saw on the street Hamza was preaching against Jihad here, and serious about his covenant of security. I don't know Bakri, I have seen mixed messages online but last time I saw Anjum Choudhary preach he also spoke about a covenant of security. I have linked to some of Hamza's kutbah's in the side bar. Do go through them to see if I am wrong, but don't radicalize yourself and blame me. The thing is, Hamza's video's which Glen Jenvey put up could be taken in the context of radicalization. In his defence he said they were in the context of what was happening in Bosnia at the time. The jury rejected that defence, unsurprisingly as 7/7 happened two days into the start of his trial.
Glen, as you probably all know by now reverted to Islam over the phone with Omar Bakri and he talks about making peace between Al Qaeda and "The West" rather than any threat. I have never known for certain if these guys are a threat or not. Giving evidence Mohammed Hamid said that there was a debate at Finsbury between those who thought the UK attack on Iraq and Afghanistan was a breach of covenant and those who thought the covenant still existed for Muslims living here and benefitting from this system.
I think they have definately suffered from their own anger allowing them to be costsrued as a threat. For example, in the video I posted the other day Abu Waleed talks about kaffirs not washing. Would the Daily Mail interpret this as hatred of all of us? Would a jury of his peers? He talks OK to me. I don't get any hatred vibes. When I first spoke to him on the phone I got the impression that they were doing "PVE" for free. Watching these videos it is hard not to slip into the mindset of the "journalists" who make money listening through and picking out phrases here and there which might sound vaguely threatening.
The Daily Mail would also argue- everyone today is arguing taking Isa as an example that these preachers should take some responsibility for what they put online and they are right. Atilla always said his hatred and anger was directed at the government, but it wouldn't always sound like that to a stranger sometimes I am pretty sure from the comments which have appeared on my videos of him preaching.
None of this makes a lot of diference to me. I wouldn't give a shit if Muslims did think I was a dirty kuffar. I have always liked the track. Daniel Sanford said they all used to come away from court singing it and I don't think he is an extremist. Obviously I don't want anyone to blow up or be blown up here or over there, but myself here I am just a curious observer.
Nobody blow up OK? It wont do you or your cause any good for a start and you wont be around to try to wade through all this toward a peace where we can all look each other in the eye and say- we did that.
UPDATE: I just found this on an Islamic forum posted in some argument between Muslims about Glen Jenvey's revertion to Islam:

MALUNG TV NEWS
I had three punctures today on two different bikes. Life is trying to tell me something important? Lets find out.
Before all that I cycled to Whitechapel to buy some dv tapes. You know, I thought- fuck it. Lets take up filming mad Muslims again. See what happens. This time, I am much calmer, much more certain of what I am doing and why I am doing it. Hamza and Atilla was a very painful, obsessive, emotionally draining experience. I've had a lot of time off, during which time I have become very good friends with Musa Ahmet. In five years I've had zero financial success, but I've got to know Musa, so I don't care. Its all been worth it.
A friend of mine asked me to pick up some tailors chalk. I knew a place a little further north of the river. I cycled up brick lane to pick up a breakfast from one of the famous bagel shops. As I cycled off I saw a face I recognized but couldn't put a name to. I sat and thought for a second, then turned round.
"Are you Mousa Brown?"
"Dave Bones!"
The last time I had seen this Mousa he was behind bullet proof glass at Woolwich crown court. It was good to see him as a free man, carrying on with his life. We talked for ages about the court case. I had missed his testimony, but the court reporter who I had become friends with told me he had made a good account of himself.
It sounded like I had missed the most interesting part of the trial.
"I made Farrel look like an idiot. He only asked me one question which actually related to the charge I was on."
He said the Police had suppressed tapes which would clear him, and distorted tapes in places so they appeared to say something else. He said at one point after he was charged a policeman came in to the interview room at Paddington green and said
"Salaam Aleikum! Don't worry, we know you are not a terrorist. I can help you."
He reckoned the whole trial was ridiculous. He was aware of the tensions between Atilla and Hamid from first hand in Belmarsh but didn't believe either were bad people.
"Run a terror organisation? Hamid couldn't run a bath."
He said that in pre trial arrangements The judge had banned them from referring to an expert from the 21/7 trial who had said that what they were talking about was from the Koran. During his testimony he had tried to refer to the guy as someone who could help the jury a couple of times and the judge and prosecution had objected, leading the jury to smell a rat. One time when he dismissed the jury for lunch the judge had held Mousa back.
"I know very well what you are up to. What do you think you are playing at?" he asked.
"I am trying to defend myself." said Mousa.
He said that the Police had released his minibus and his sprinter van almost immediately after he had got out. His wife had declared them off the road for the 18 months he was inside. Within days a tow truck came to pick one of them up as untaxed. He suspected the Police had a hand in this.
"Inside I wouldn't talk to the screws. They suspected me of this and that. I don't hide what I think of people. I got arrested doing what I have always done for twenty years. I pray five times a day. I am a Muslim."
He said he wouldn't want to repeat the experience but he had learned from it.
"I bet you steer clear of Muslim groups now no? Have you been back to Speakers Corner?" I asked.
He said that he had a couple of times.
When I got back home I offered to help a friend down the road to pick up a couple of bags of tiling glue for his floor on our bikes. We cycled along the river. I had puncture number one near the millennium dome. The tube was so old I couldn't get the valve undone so I had to push the bike to B+Q to get some hacksaw blades. My friend carried a spare tube, but it was an ultra thin one for a racer. Luckily with 25kg of floor glue on the handlebars it went not too far from home.
A couple of hours later I borrowed a bike and headed up to east London at the invitation of Abu Waleed. As there is a bit of interest in what I am doing now my tourist camera no longer cuts it, so it is always a scrabble to find friends with professional cameras who are actually interested enough in what I do to lend a hand.
Funnily enough, the person who has always shown the most interest is a girl who is as facially pierced as I am. Obviously with Muslims strict rules of segregation this posses a problem. I had emailed Mr Walled earlier. He told me the room in which they met had a curtain down the middle and she would have to be on the other side.
We arrived to find the London School of Sharreah was under an east London railway arch. There were maybe 12 British Asian guys in their early twenties and through the curtain I think I could see two females in Muslim dress. My camera woman friend set up on the other side.
Abu Waleed talks very fast. He makes a lot of jokes, more than Hamza. He isn't angry like Hamza was some times and Atilla was most of the time in Finsbury park. He is happy to critisize other Muslim scholars by name, and does so a lot. Scholars he respects are Hamza, Bakri who he calls Sheik Omar, Al Faisal, and he also spoke well of a Palestinian sheik who he left his audience to guess. I would assume he is referring to Abu Qatada.
At no point did he remotely glorify terrorism, or encourage his audience in any acts of violence, but he would indulge in a lot of black humour about the situation Muslims find themselves in. I could see why he was charismatic to the group in front of him and how what he said and the way he said it would be relevant to their lives. I was bemused at how often I heard the unmistakable chuckle of my friend with the camera through the curtain. The atmosphere Waleed projects is very relaxed. People would duck out to answer their mobile phones and interupted whenever they liked, mostly to ask him to repeat his justifications from the Koran.
At the end of his talk he thought I was going to ask questions. I had made loads of notes after our phone conversation the other day but hadn't brought them as I knew we would need much more time to go through everything and I was too knackered to attempt questioning at 10 pm on a friday. I asked him to think of a place he would be comfortable to sit down for an afternoon to film properly.
On the way home we stopped in my favourite east end pakistani dinner.
"They believe things I would disagree with but they are OK really as people aren't they?" said my camerawoman.
"I think so. I think we are more extreme than they are" I agreed.

People would duck out to answer their mobile phones and interupted whenever they liked, mostly to ask him to repeat his justifications from the Koran.
At the end of his talk he thought I was going to ask questions. I had made loads of notes after our phone conversation the other day but hadn't brought them as I knew we would need much more time to go through everything and I was too knackered to attempt questioning at 10 pm on a friday. I asked him to think of a place he would be comfortable to sit down for an afternoon to film properly.
On the way home we stopped in my favourite east end pakistani dinner.
"They believe things I would disagree with but they are OK really as people aren't they?" said my camerawoman.
"I think so. I think we are more extreme than they are" I agreed.

A notorious hate preacher has been isolated for his own safety after telling other terror inmates the Koran does not justify violence.
Atilla Ahmet, 44, also shocked fanatical Muslim prisoners by stepping in to protect a guard who was attacked.
The ex-bodyguard of Abu Hamza, who was exposed by the Mirror three years ago, even apologised to the targets of his past extremist rants.
Now Ahmet - jailed in March for nearly seven years for soliciting murder - has been moved to a hospital wing for prisoners at risk of attack.
One insider said: "For one of them to admit that even parts of their message were wrong and unjustified is a significant development."
Ahmet remains a devout Muslim praying five times a day at Belmarsh prison in South East London.
His change of heart comes as the Chief Inspector of Prisons warned that staff at the jail were not trained enough to stop radicalisation.
Ahmet helped Abu Hamza poison the minds of hundreds of young Muslims at Finsbury Park mosque in North London. The Mirror recorded him ranting about "filthy unbelievers".
He was kicked out by mosque leaders the day after our story.
I disputed the Mirror article at the time. I thought Atilla preached homophobia and I didn't like the words he used about "Jews" but he would usually qualify that he meant "Zionists" and his audience knew that. WEIGHT HAS BEEN LIFTED
OK lovely weekend. I am happy, Musa is happy, Atilla's wife is happy. Atilla was apparently in tears of joy that he didn't get IPP'd. Incarceration has had a transforming effect, long may it continue. Obviously I wonder if our country hadn't been involved in ariel bombardment and occupation of Islamic countries whether Hamid and Atilla would have said these words. I think they are British and Britain made them. It was only when the tapes got released that I heard what I thought of in court as a non commital mumble after Hamid's "breakfast" comments as Atilla saying "I know." I am glad now, that the Police moved when they did. Musa said in court that the Police knew that Atilla was falling away from Hamid's group and that he wasn't the emir, still they recorded what Atilla said.
Obviously the Police can only try and stop atrocities in this country they can't solve the wider picture we are all a part of which has involved unaccounted for atrocities in Iraq who no one will be brought to justice for. That is up to us. I hope Atilla will be able to maintain his Islamic faith and move in a more positive direction. Musa tells me he is reading the Koran properly inside and it has been a revelation to him. When he gets out he wants to concentrate entirely on his family who he is sorry he has neglected.
I didn't realise until Saturday quite how much tension this has been for me since 2003. It could have ended much much worse in ways I don't want to think about. Saturday night we managed to score a full Tama drum kit off of Freecycle. I knew it was worth joining Hampstead freecycle as when I was squatting up there I found expensive French cookware and suchlike thrown in the street. The only thing the kind family whose son has just left for college asked was that we make a donation to Gt. Ormond st childrens hospital so the next gig will be for that.
We picked it up from a street almost parallel to Bishop's Avenue and went off to play a gig in North London with some of the Random Artist posse. I wasn't sure how we would be received as every other act involved rappers. We finally took to the stage about 1 AM, playing into a techno, almost gabba track the DJ was playing. Me and fastfingers particularly enjoy this as we often jam along to techno, but on a proper rig we could actually match it in terms of fullness of sound. The DJ managed to flick the cross fader a couple of times crashing us in at full tilt which felt fucking great.
I think this is the first time we have played through a proper techno rig as opposed to a band PA and it really payed off especially for Mr fastfingers. I could hear every slap and the whole phasing effect. It was like techno bass guitar. I think we need to buy one of these rigs. Unfortunately I couldn't really hear myself properly as the monitor didn't work and my amp just isn't loud enough to monitor from. I could hear when I was playing the wrong note, when I played the right one it slipped into the mash. Obviously in a situation where if you can't hear yourself you are doing the right thing is not ideal but I'm not bothered as we had probably the best audience at any gig we have done so far, we jumped about like lunatics and the dancers were fucking fantastic.
A few people said the set was a bit short and I got lost a bit for the slow stuff in the middle as I don't know how to play funk but we got a lot of good feedback from the audience and the "What the fuck is this" looks when we started were priceless. I particularly love the way the dancers cook dinner and have a chat in the afternoon before the gig, and when I open the dressing room door to tell them we are about to go on they are fully costume and colour coordinated, totally original every time as if they have been meticulously designed by a stylist.
It's really nice to see the Random Artist guys, crusty and anti-establishment as ever still in spontaneous messy creativity mode, focusing on what they can achieve with African children, totally self-funded by parties such as these rather than what they can't achieve protesting here. Do watch the film Invisible Children if you can. Whatever your political persuasion, the stories of the child soldiers of Northern Uganda will move you. There is a "makings of" on google video but it's a bit shit compared to the real thing which you really must watch.
I have turned such a corner here I have been thinking about leaving this blog here and starting a new one. Obviously I'd still like to finish a film when Atilla gets out. Thanks for the encouragement from all sides of the Political spectrum.
I am currently working on a gonzo edit of stuff from Hamid's friends and enemies at Speakers Corner last weekend. I've been a bit tardy but it will be up soon.

MURDER ON THE DANCEFLOOR
I've got to hand it to the Sun, doing what they do best. They've got Atilla disco dancing.
Burly Ahmet used to be a hard-drinking minder for a Turkish crime family before coming under the influence of preacher of hate Abu Hamza. Ex-pals told how he used to love ogling £1-a-time strippers at the grubby Railway Tavern pub in New Cross, South London. One friend said: “He spent all his time chasing women and drinking lager, eight or nine pints a night.
“But the only thing he was really religious about was strippers. I don’t think he ever missed a Thursday night. It was a dive and the women were ropey but Atilla loved it. He was always first to slip the girls a quid.”

ABU AZIZ
Looking thru my footage I knocked up another quick edit.
This is Abu Aziz, refered to in the news at the time as Abu Hamza's "Press Secretary". He was usually like this with journalists. I think he is still at large though I haven't seen or heard of him in years.
You get a bit of my "technique" with the fundies at the end. The Bin Laden look alike in the last shot called himself "Abu Jihad" and gave an interview to ITN outside the Old Bailey during Hamza's courtcase (later) saying "The Black Flag of Islam will one day fly over Downing st." He was one of the friendliest people outside the mosque.

FINALLY RETIRING
The jury in the trial of five men allegedly involved in terrorism camps has retired to consider its verdicts.
Mohammed Hamid, of east London, and four others deny charges related to the use of what prosecutors say were camps to groom young Muslim men for violence.
During the three month trial, the jury heard that Mr Hamid was a close friend of the ringleader of the failed suicide attacks in London on 21 July 2005.
...Joel Bennathan QC, for Hamid, said his client was not a terrorist but a fantasist.
He said his behaviour, including his joking around witnessed on film in court, was more akin to a Carry On film that a sinister plot...

Kibley Da Costa, 24 of Bentons Lane, West Norwood, is accused of helping self-styled "Osama Bin London" Mohammed Hamid prepare Muslim men for Jihad at terrorist training camps.
But Da Costa's supposed extremism was likened to the beliefs of Christian monks by his barrister Paul Keleher at Woolwich Crown Court.

Mr Keleher told jurors observant Muslims have the same values that monks and nuns espouse - finding God through physical struggle and hardship.

I was humbled, astounded, amazed to see that Rachel North has spent time rounding up a comprehensive summary of me and my trial watching. Around all this "War on Terror" stuff there are a few people who have the light properly switched on if you catch my drift. Rachel is one of them.
She has featured a bit of Musa Ahmet's filming at the end. Musa watched a bit of the trial with me sometimes. It was strange going for lunch with him into a hallal kebab place up the road from the court. He is quite a sharp dresser and some very sexy black girls were giving him a good looking over which he seemed oblivious to. With most of my friends who are single I'd be nudging them to "crack on" to them in this situation. Because Musa is a Muslim I didn't know what to do.
I went to see Charlie Wilson's War last night. I won't spoil it for you here, go see it. It is fucking fantastic. Warm, funny, crazy, beautiful stuff. A really literal, punching script. I came out of the cinema a different person and promptly headed for the cinema bar and got totally pissed. My girlfriend woke me up this morning angrily telling me that my snoring had given her nightmares.

TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS
I managed a coupla hours down at Belmarsh watching the prosecution summing up against Hamid and a bit of the case against Mousah Brown... Yeah anyway. I was going to go back tomorrow and watch Mr Bennathan summing up for the defence but, err... I don't think so.

IN THE HOT HOUSE
Hamid seemed exasperated being asked about Atilla's statements. Some of them he agreed with, some of them he didn't. Some of them he was out of the room getting food. He was asked about Atilla's statements about those higher up in power being legitimate targets. Why didn't he stand up and say that is wrong? He said he followed it straight away by saying
"Fight only those who fight you."
What did he mean by sacrifice?
"Mr Bennathan (Hamid's QC) is sacrificing by being here when he could be in the Bahama's."
He said many people could attest to the fact that he warned people to stay away from Finsbury park Mosque. He had met top Muslim scholars as well as a Muslim Lord. The trustees of Finsbury park mosque could back him up. what seemed like the most incriminating statements of his he attributed to being talk about drugs, or he said he couldn't remember.
